Microsoft has scheduled a mystery event for Tuesday at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington, fueling speculation about its plans for artificial intelligence. The company has not disclosed the details of the 10 AM event, but has stated that it will “share some progress on a few exciting projects.” The tech giant has been increasing its investment in AI, including a partnership with OpenAI, the creators of the ChatGPT bot, and integrating it into the Bing search engine.
Last month, Microsoft made a significant investment in OpenAI, estimated to be around $10 billion, and is working to blend OpenAI’s systems into its software, while also providing cloud-computing support to the AI research lab. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, expressed excitement for the event in a tweet, showing a picture with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Competition in the field of generative AI is intensifying, with Google releasing its own ChatGPT rival, Bard, for testing. Bard is based on LaMDA, an AI model developed by Google, and aims to provide detailed answers to simple prompts. Google has also previewed some AI-powered features that will soon be available in its search engine, designed to provide insights for queries where there is no single correct answer.
According to Statista, Bing currently holds 9% of the global search market, and Microsoft’s integration of ChatGPT into Bing is seen as a move to challenge Google’s dominance in the field.
