After years of anticipation, Seagate is poised to release its first hard drive utilizing heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology. According to Tom’s Hardware, a new sales page on the Seagate website reveals the upcoming Exos M 30TM and 32TB hard disk drive (HDD), which features 3TB per platter and boasts three times the power efficiency per terabyte compared to current hard drives.
The Exos M series is powered by Seagate’s cutting-edge Mozaic 3+ platform, marking the debut of HAMR technology in Seagate’s HDD lineup. HAMR works by applying localized heat to the disk material during the writing process, enabling the creation of smaller regions and thus increasing the storage capacity per platter. These advancements are significant steps towards the potential development of a 50TB HDD in the future.
Although Seagate has not yet announced an official release date for the Exos M, the news has generated considerable excitement within the tech community. A video from the Upscaled series offers an in-depth explanation of the HAMR technology and its transformative impact on the future of HDD storage.
Stay tuned for further updates as Seagate moves closer to introducing this groundbreaking technology to the market.
