Google announced a new AI chatbot technology called Bard on Monday, which will be rolled out in the near future. Bard will go head to head with its rival ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI.
Powered by Google’s large language model LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), Bard will be initially available to selected trusted testers before being made available to the general public, as stated in a blog post on Monday.
Last week, news reports suggested that Google was conducting internal tests of its AI features, as part of its “code red” plan to compete with ChatGPT, the well-known chatbot backed by Microsoft. These features include a chatbot named “Apprentice Bard” and new search desktop designs that can be used in a Q&A format.
In a statement, Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote, “Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that simplify complex information and provide multiple perspectives in an easy-to-understand format, allowing you to grasp the big picture and learn more from the web, whether it’s exploring additional perspectives, such as blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or diving deeper into related topics, such as steps for beginners.”
Google provided an example of using Bard to clarify complex subjects, such as explaining new findings from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old. These product tests followed a recent all-hands meeting where employees raised concerns about the company’s competitiveness in AI, due to the sudden popularity of ChatGPT.
