Chinese tech giant Baidu has unveiled its latest AI innovations: Ernie 4.5, an upgraded foundation model, and Ernie X1, a reasoning-focused AI designed for complex tasks. In a significant move, Baidu has also made its AI-powered chatbot, Ernie Bot, free to all users.
Ernie 4.5 is immediately available through the Ernie Bot platform, with Ernie X1 expected soon. While Baidu hasn’t released traditional research documentation, it announced that Ernie 4.5 will be open-sourced on June 30th. This multimodal model excels at processing text, images, audio, and video, boasting improved language capabilities for better conversations, reasoning, and context retention, even understanding satire and memes.
Baidu claims Ernie 4.5 outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 on various internal benchmarks and costs only 1% as much. It’s also accessible via APIs on Baidu AI Cloud’s Quianfan platform. Pricing for Ernie 4.5 starts at roughly AED 0.00168 per thousand input tokens and AED 0.000798 per thousand output tokens.
Ernie X1 is a multimodal reasoning model adept at advanced search, image and document understanding, code interpretation, webpage analysis, and TreeMind mapping. Baidu highlights its strengths in Chinese knowledge Q&A, writing, logical reasoning, and mathematical problem-solving. It uses progressive reinforcement learning and offers a visible chain of thought for enhanced transparency.
